Spring Bay Horse Trials - Some good ideas, can we keep them going? |
|
From Mike Winter, Area VIII Chair This past weekend was 'normal' at Spring Bay in some respects - in that it was an April weekend that had some unpredictable weather. In other ways the event offered some new and old twists on communications and rider information that are genuinely good ideas for the sport. There were 3 specific things that I noticed and appreciated as a competitor: 1. Communications before the event. The organizing committee emailed competitors on more than one occasion before the event to provide information about the time schedule and about construction at KHP that changed traffic flow. 2. Coursewalks. The re-establishment of a throwback idea - we used to do coursewalks the day before a horse trial at every competition and have gotten away from that. In this case three local professionals - Megan Lanzarone, Cathy Wieschhoff and Martha Lambert - donated their time to provide free coursewalks at BN, N and T levels. It's a great idea - you can always learn from other perspectives - even if you have a coach at the event. 3. Meeting the Officials. Friday evening the officials and organizers were available outside the show office for a short meeting to answer any questions and go over rule changes. This promotes discussion between competitors and officials - always a good thing. I would like to encourage other organizers to employ some of these ideas, professionals to consider volunteering their time for coursewalks, and competitors to take advantage of these offers for both coursewalks and talking with officials. In the meantime - kudos to those who ran Spring Bay for making the effort! |

Area 8 Booth Plans at Rolex |
|
Area 8 will again have a booth in the Trade Fair at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event on April 24 - 28. This year we will be running the ever-popular 'Shopping Bag Check' as a fundraiser for the Area and its Programs. In addition, we've invited the Instructor Certification Program (ICP) to participate in the booth to raise awareness for both riders and instructors about this program and its benefits.
We are looking for volunteers help set up (Wednesday afternoon), to man the booth during the event (Thurs thru Sun) and tear down (Sunday after show jumping). Adult Rider members Lee Kirkpatrick and Traci Scott have graciously taken on the job of 'booth captain' for the duration - and we need to surround them with some help. If you can spare a couple of hours and would like to help please contact Shannon Risner by email at

and let her know when you could work (please include your cell number on your email). Thanks in advance for volunteering!

Fundraiser for Darren Chiacchia |
|
As many of you know, Darren Chiacchia was critically injured in a fall on cross country at Red Hills Horse Trials in mid-March. Darren has been off life support since early this week and is steadily recovering - and his medical bills are mounting. A fundraiser for Darren's benefit is planned in Tallahassee, FL on April 2.
The benefit is open to anyone who wishes to attend (click here for flyer) - and even if you cannot, please consider making a donation. Please visit www.EquestrianAidFoundation.org to make a contribution in Darren's name.
